Our inaugural First Friday Family-Friendly Shabbat took place this past Friday, November 1st. It was incredible to see Bettie Port Hall filled with families joining together in the midst of a busy Friday evening to welcome the Sabbath. Rabbi Goldberg played his guitar as the families said blessings together over the candles, challah and wine. A festive meal was had by all, and there was some playtime prior to the start of the Friday night service.
Some children chose to join their parents in the sanctuary while others chose to participate in Shabbat inspired activities in the Moadon. These activities were led by our very own Gan Shalom teachers. The kids made kiddush cups to take home and use as they celebrate Shabbat in their homes next Friday night.
During the evening, Rabbis Goldberg and Conover visited the children in the Moadon to enhance their Shabbat experience. Then the children joined the Rabbis and congregants on the Bimah to conclude the service with kiddush and songs. It was a really special moment to see this many children on the Bimah at a Friday night Service.
Positive feelings were felt by all that participated, even those who attend services without children. It was truly an evening that showed what Shabbat and Judaism is all about….passing on traditions not only within your own family, but within your Temple Sholom family – that’s what Mishpacha is all about!
Pam Lookatch is the co-chair of Mishpacha, on the Temple Sholom Board and has been a member since 2009 when she moved here with her family from New York.
