RECYCLING CAN BE CONFUSING, BUT DON’T LET THAT STOP YOU!

I try to be a good citizen of the world…and that means recycling.  But why is it so complicated?  I can’t tell you how many times I have stood at Starbucks trying to figure out does the empty cup go here and the plastic top go there.

And even in the Eco Chavura meeting we have spirited discussions of what is recyclable.  Judith Nemes has a great maxim “if it is hard plastic and clean it goes in recycling, if it is soft it goes into trash.”  But what about empty used pizza boxes?  It’s cardboard, right?  I think the rule is if there is food residue it goes in the trash.  If there is any food inside the container it either gets washed or goes in the trash.  Foil is recyclable.  Newspapers obviously.  Used paper towels?  And do you take the lids off of the plastic bottles you recycle?

Eco Chavura is creating picture and word signage that will help all of us know where to put our garbage.  Please take a moment to look before you dump.
