Monday Monthly Meal

Volunteers are needed to shop, prepare, serve, and clean up, as well as prepare bag “meals” for guests to take home and for any overflow crowd. This project is now in its third year and provides an opportunity for Temple members to meet each other and to give back to the community. Sholom Evening Book Club

During our next meeting we will be reading People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of March. Brooks has turned the intriguing but sparely detailed history of the Sarajevo Haggadah into an emotionally rich, thrilling fictionalization. Readers will experience crucial moments in the book’s history through a series of fascinating, fleshed-out short stories. Join us for a special Shabbat Service to install our Board of Directors and honor all our Temple Sholom volunteers. A special dinner sponsored in part by the Temple will be served after Services. We invite all members of our community who have volunteered their time to support Temple Sholom (Board Members, Committee Members, Ambassadors, Monday Meal helpers and anyone else who has volunteered at the Temple) to attend. Volunteers, please plan to make your reservation with a contribution of at least $5 per person. Guests and other congregants are invited to attend with a contribution of $20 per person. Guest Speaker and Disinguished Historian: Gary Willis, Author of "What Paul Meant."

Join us in the Mendelson Gallery during the last week of our “Tolerance of Belief” Art Exhibit. Dr. Garry Wills will be discussing anti-Semitism based on his new book, What Paul Meant. Wills is the author of numerous books, including Saint Augustine, Papal Sin, and the Pulitzer Prize–winning Lincoln at Gettysburg. He has won many other awards, among them two National Book Critics Circle Awards and the 1998 National Medal for the Humanities. He is currently Professor of History Emeritus at Northwestern University.

Annual Dinner Celebration

Travel to Israel with Temple Sholom!
Monday June 16 - Monday June 30.
Join us on Temple Sholom’s exciting trip to Israel! We have planned a three-track trip to accommodate families with children, adults only, and high school teenagers. You will enjoy hiking in the mountains, jeep tours in the Golan Heights, kayaking in the Jordan River, visiting both a Druz Village and a Beduin tent community, swimming in the Dead Sea, and exploring Masada. Applications should be sent to the attention of Iona Klimoski, and received by the Temple no later than Friday January 4, 2008 with a $600 deposit (per person), $300 of which is non refundable. As one of the largest institutional members of the Lakeview Action Coalition (LAC), Temple Sholom has the opportunity to play a major role in the upcoming LAC Community Convention. A Community Convention is a gathering of the community, the institutions, and concerned citizens to meet with elected officials in order to discuss the issues faced by the community, inform the elected officials of those issues, and receive commitments from those officials about their intended actions. Kabbalah: What is Jewish Mysticism?

Dr. Byron L Sherwin will present a survey of five major models of Jewish mystical experience as they developed during the history of Jewish mysticism, including some thoughts on the current popularity of Kabbalah today, and whether it is really authentic Jewish mysticism.
Dr. Sherwin is an internationally renowned Jewish theologian, ethicist and scholar of Jewish philosophy and mysticism. He is the author of over 25 books and 150 articles, many of which have been translated into Polish, Spanish, Italian, German, Czech and Chinese. He and his works have been featured in national and international media – most recently (2006), on the History Channel’s program, ‘Secrets of Kabbalah’. Since 1970, Dr. Sherwin has served on the faculty of Chicago’s Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies, where he is currently the Distinguished Service Professor and Director of Doctoral Studies.

The Union for Reform Judaism's Adult Study Retreat

The theme is “Israel at 60” and URJ will be partnering with ARZA. The faculty will include Israeli and North American scholars who will connect their limmudim (study sessions) to Israel. The faculty will include: Anat Hoffman and Mark Rosenstein from Israel; Michael Morgan, Sue Levi Elwell, Mark Washofsky, David Nelson and others. A mini-Ulpan (hebrew language study), taught by Mira Angrist, will be offered. There will be a special track for educators on the teaching of Israel. For those who would like to study in Israel, we are working with the NFTY in Israel Department to present the EIE-Adult Summer Institute, July 20-August 3. This program will be a blend of formal lecture and travel as we explore Israel through the chronology of her history, from Biblical times to the present. The group will be based at Kibbutz Tzuba, which is outside of Jerusalem. REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN for both the ADULT STUDY RETREAT and the EIE-ADULT SUMMER INSTITUTE.
