Zion & Zionism in Reform Judaism
The phrase “Reform is a verb” alludes to the fact the Reform Judaism is an ever evolving movement that never stagnates. However it seems that on no other matter the changes within the Reform movement have been so dramatic as the attitudes toward Israel and Zionism.
We have come a long way from the total rejection of Classical Reformers (“We consider ourselves no longer a nation” Pittsburgh 1885) to a heartfelt embracing of the State of Israel and Zionism (“We are committed to Medinat Yisrael, Pittsburgh 1999), and to the last few years that have been somewhat challenging for Reform Jews regarding Israel.
We will discuss the complex relationship of Reform Jews and Zionism, especially from the liturgical perspective.
