Danny M. Cohen - December Member Spotlight
An Assistant Professor of Instruction at Northwestern University's School of Education and Social Policy
and the Crown Family Center for Jewish and Israel Studies, Danny M. Cohen teaches Holocaust Memory, Holocaust Pedagogy and the Design of Human Rights Programs. He was appointed by Governor Quinn to the Illinois Holocaust and Genocide Commission, was a Faculty Fellow of the Auschwitz Jewish Center and currently is a Global Justice Fellow of the American Jewish World Service. Danny is about to launch an exciting educational program called THE UNSILENCE PROJECT which will support educators in schools and communities in addressing taboo, hidden and marginalized narratives of atrocity and human rights.
He is also eagerly anticipating the 2015 publication of his first novel TRAIN, a thriller about six teenagers living in Nazi Berlin who witness and attempt to escape the round-ups and deportations of the Jews and Roma (so-called "Gypsies"). We are hoping for an
autographed copy! Danny is originally from London, which is where he met his husband Bernard Cherkasov while Bernard was on vacation. They moved to Chicago, were married at Temple Sholom in 2006 and joke that their friends came from around the world to attend their "BIG FAT GAY JEWISH WEDDING". Bernard is CEO of Equality Illinois, one of the largest LGBT rights organizations in the Midwest, and their daughter Miriam is in Jr. Kindergarten at Gan Shalom, where she especially enjoys making challah on Fridays.
In an upcoming three-part series at Temple Sholom on the evenings of Dec. 11, Jan. 12 and Jan. 27, Danny will screen the film "Paragraph 175" and discuss the many communities persecuted by the Nazis, and the future of Holocaust Education. High-schoolers and older are welcome to attend. Please RSVP to Kylie Zacharia at email@example.com. We are proud to have Danny and his family as members of our sacred community and look forward to engaging with Danny about the events and meaning of the Holocaust.
