Social Action (Tikkun Olam)

Details... Social Action Event to Raise Awareness of Genocide in Africa Wednesday, Sep 10, 7:00 p.m. (Temple Sholom) Tikkun Olam, ‘repairing the world’ is a cornerstone of Reform Judaism and an integral part of the on-going activities at Temple Sholom. Our Social Action projects and activities are constantly expanding, and working on these mitzvot is a wonderful way to meet other Temple members.

Projects and activities include a monthly Feed the Hungry Program working shoulder-to-shoulder to pack bag lunches for the homeless of Chicago; High Holy Days Food Drives; clothing drives; visiting senior residences to sing and bring cheer; discussions and actions that impact social policy issues locally and nationally. In the summer of 2008, Temple Sholom will be expanding our Monday Meal and cooking and serving a hot meal to people in need once a week. This is a congregant-driven volunteer program and new participants are always welcome! See our calendar page for specific dates, times and sponsorship information.

Once a year, Temple Sholom’s Social Action committee organizes a Temple-wide “Mitzvah Day” known as Olam Ha Mitzvot. Volunteer your time on Sunday, April 6th and join others in our community in the pursuit of Tikkun Olam (healing the world). Donate blood with LifeSource; get your hair cut by Charles Ifergan’s salon so it can be donated to make wigs; stitch together blankets for those in need; bring your children to decorate lunch bags for the hungry and make Dolls for Darfur. Participate in a “Bark” Mitzvah with your dog by visiting a senior residence, play Bingo at a home for the blind and much more! To register, download an Olam HaMitzvot registration form. Contact Linda Armitage at 773-655-8101 x324 or Linda@sholomchicago.org for more information.

Each year, a Social Action calendar is published, outlining the year’s events, programs, and volunteer opportunities. View the 2007-2008 Social Action Calendar.
