A Borrowed Identity (105 minutes, in Arabic and Hebrew, with English subtitles)

Directed by Eran Riklis, a leading Israeli filmmaker, in 2014, this film is based on the book Dancing Arabs (2002), by Arab-Israeli writer Sayed Kashua. Film critic Godfrey Cheshire wrote that complex interrelated identities of Jewish and Palestinian Israelis are explored in a moving way in this film, a drama about a young Arab who finds reasons to “pass” as Jewish. Eyad, an Israeli-Palestinian teenager from Tira, moves to Jerusalem to attend an elite Jewish boarding school, where he seems to be the only Arab student. He then meets Naomi, a Jewish student, and falls in love. As part of his school-mandated community service, he also meets and befriends Yonatan, who is homebound with muscular dystrophy, and his mother, Edna. These relationships also change and enrich his life.
