Pretrial Fairness Act Educational Session

Tuesday, October 18, 2022 23 Tishrei 5783

7:00 PM - 9:00 PMMixed Presence

Please join the Sholom Advocacy Committee on October 18th from 7:00-8:30 pm to hear a panel of legal experts explain the Pretrial Fairness Act, a section of the Safe-T Act criminal justice reform bill that was signed into law last February. Included in the bill are elimination of cash bail, which incarcerated defendants only because they could not raise the required money needed for their bail, and changes to electronic monitoring policy. These issues are to go into effect at the beginning of 2023.

As the fall legislative session draws closer, opponents of the Pretrial Fairness Act are spreading fear and false claims about what the act does and how it will affect the community.

To understand how this law will affect our safety in Chicago, please join us either in-person or via Zoom. Panelists include Emmanuel Andre, Cook County Public Defender’s Office; Sarah Straudt, Director of Policy for the Chicago Appleseed Center for Fair Courts; and Marjorie Moss, Northwestern Law School-Children and Family Justice Center, and a member of our congregation.
