An Art-Full Afternoon in Bronzeville

Sunday, June 12, 2022 13 Sivan 5782

2:00 PM - 4:00 PMIn-person at Gallery Guichard | 436 E. 47th St., Chicago, IL 60653

DEADLINE EXTENDED! OPEN TO ALL TEMPLE MEMBERS GUESTS. A FEW BUS SEATS ARE STILL AVAILABLE (NO EXTRA CHARGE FOR BUS TO AND FROM THE GALLERY).

WTS and Shalem, the temple’s Embracing Racial & Ethnic Diversity Working Group, invite all temple members to an afternoon of amazing art and socializing. Chicago is home to the historic Bronzeville Art District, the largest African American art district in the country, and Gallery Guichard is the most prestigious showcase of modern and contemporary works by artists of the African Diaspora as well as multicultural artists.

We’ll have the opportunity to meet with dynamic gallery owners/artists, Andre and Frances Guichard, and learn about the collection, the history of the Bronzeville Art District, and the “art of art collecting.” We can view and even purchase from the vast collection of paintings and sculpture while socializing with old and new friends during a catered reception (vegetarian/vegan/cash bar). Weather permitting, we can also enjoy the stunning Great Migration Sculpture Garden.

And there’s more! The Guichards have arranged for two galleries in the building to open just for our group so we can meet the artists and see their work. Alpha Burton is a visual artist who makes work that is abstract, conceptual, experimental, and representational. She says she is most inspired by feeling that she has a social responsibility to record history. Alan Emerson Hicks is a Chicago-based artist working with found plastic objects to create strange flowers, butterflies, and tribal emblems. He heats the flotsam and jetsam of the modern world into bright bouquet and butterflies to make work of startling impact.

Motor coaches will leave PROMPTLY at 1:15 PM from the Temple, and they will leave Gallery Guichard at 4:00 PM to return to Temple Sholom. There is no additional charge for the bus, but please make your reservations by May 29. If you go on your own, there is street parking around Gallery Guichard.

Temple COVID-19 guidelines for this event:
You must show proof of vaccination or a negative PCR test within 72 hours of event or of boarding the bus. Masks must be worn the entire time while on the bus; they are optional at Gallery Guichard.
