9:30 AM - 10:30 AMJoin Henry Sapoznik as he explores the forgotten moment of Black cantors (called "shvartze khazonim") who entertained Jews in the theater, on record and on radio in the 1920s and 1930s. The presentation will include dozens of period advertisements, reviews and features which appeared in the Yiddish and African-American press and the playing of the only known commercial recording of a shvartze khazn from 1923.
Henry Sapoznik is an award-winning producer, musicologist and performer, and writer in the fields of traditional and popular Yiddish and American music and culture. A five-time Grammy-nominated producer/performer, Sapoznik has been featured on over fifty records including having reissued over 30 anthologies of Yiddish, jazz, old-time, cantorial, ragtime, blues, Italian, swing, blackface minstrelsy and bluegrass recordings.
