The Makom Book Club is an opportunity for those ages 21-39 to come together and read books written by Jewish authors or with Jewish themes & subjects. Meetings take place at Wilde Restaurant & Bar* over appetizers and feature community-led discussion. Participation is best when at least 1/2 of the book is read before the meeting.
This month, we'll be reading Milk Fed by Rachel Broder.
“Rachel is twenty-four, a lapsed Jew who has made calorie restriction her religion. Rachel is content to carry on subsisting - until her therapist encourages her to take a ninety-day communication detox from her mother, who raised her in the tradition of calorie counting.
Rachel soon meets Miriam, a zaftig young Orthodox Jewish woman who works at her favorite frozen yogurt shop and is intent upon feeding her. Rachel is suddenly and powerfully entranced by Miriam - by her sundaes and her body, her faith and her family - and as the two grow closer, Rachel embarks on a journey marked by mirrors, mysticism, mothers, milk, and honey.”
Content Warning: disordered eating and explicit sexual content are included in this book. Please be advised of this when signing up for this Book Club meeting.
