Babka Making with Shalem and Masa Madre

Tuesday, February 9, 2021 27 Sh'vat 5781

7:00 PM - 8:30 PMZoom

Our whole Temple Sholom community is invited to join Shalem, Embracing Racial and Ethnic Diversity, and Tamar & Elena of Masa Madre, a Mexican-Jewish owned bakery in Pilsen to learn how to make their amazing chocolate babka and hear stories of how Judaism, ethnicity, and food all intersect.

Tamar and Elena are passionate bakers (and longtime friends) from Mexico City. Together they created Masa Madre, an artisanal bakery that blends their Mexican and Jewish heritage through flavors that are reminiscent of their youth and our grandmothers’ kitchens. As recent immigrants, Tamar and Elena arrived with high hopes of finding a community to welcome and guide them, however, they later realized it was them who had to build that community, and bread was the key.

"Tickets" to this virtual event are $36, and include a babka-making kit with all the ingredients you need to bake Tamar and Elena's signature chocolate babka, plus the cost to attend the class. Babka kits will be available for pickup at Temple Sholom on Monday, February 8 and Tuesday, Feburary 9. If you are able, we encourage you to purchase a "sponsor ticket" so someone who might otherwise not be able to afford to attend this event can join.

If you are interested in attending this event but cannot cover the fee, please reach out to Emma Harmon at emma@sholomchicago.org so we can make arrangements so that you are able to join!

Sorry, Registration has ended.
