Rabbi Antman's Installation as Assistant Rabbi

FRIDAY | NOV. 22 | 6:15 PM

21 Cheshvan 5785

As a proud Midwesterner, Rabbi Max G. Antman (he/him) is honored to join the Chicagoland Jewish community as the Assistant Rabbi at Temple Sholom.

Rabbi Antman grew up in Evanston, and gained his love of Judaism at Beth Emet the Free Synagogue and URJ Olin Sang Ruby Union Institute (OSRUI). He graduated cum laude from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a B.A. in Political Science and minors in English and Jewish Culture and Society. Rabbi Antman’s academic path sparked an interest in the interplay between Judaism and policy, leading him to a career as a community organizer and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Justice (DEIJ) consultant in Washington D.C. Those years solidified his passions for the work of organizing and Jewish community building, and with the goal of integrating both into a single role, he made the decision to pursue the rabbinate.

Rabbi Antman was recently ordained by Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR),  where he also completed a certificate in Jewish Organizational Leadership. During his time at HUC, Rabbi Antman prioritized learning from and working within a diverse array of Jewish communities with the hope of expanding his rabbinic knowledge and expertise. He is passionate about leveraging his rabbinic voice for social change, and believes that the most impactful justice work stems from intentional relationship building across lines of difference.

Rabbi Antman recently moved to Uptown, and in his free time can be found on a hiking trail, baking challah, or engaged in a passionate board game with friends.

Rabbi Antman will be inviting special guests and mentors, Rabbi Ken Chasen and Rabbi Andrea London

Rabbi Andrea London, Senior Rabbi at Beth Emet the Free Synagogue in Evanston and childhood rabbi and mentor to Rabbi Antman

Rabbi Andrea C. London, a distinguished leader in Jewish communal life, has been deeply involved in all facets of Beth Emet's congregational life since joining in 2000, becoming Senior Rabbi in 2010. Rabbi London's dedication extends from teaching and counseling to social justice activism, emphasizing Jewish-Muslim and Black-Jewish relations, and advocating for peace in Israel/Palestine. Her commitment earned her the 2020 Religious Community Service Award from the North Shore NAACP and the 2022 J Street Chicago Tzedek v’Shalom Award. With a background enriched by her time in Israel and inspired by mentors during her early years in Chicago, Rabbi London actively fosters interfaith dialogue and community building. She is also an accomplished author contributing to several scholarly works on Jewish scripture and values. Rabbi London holds an ordination from HUC-JIR (1996) and a doctor of divinity degree (2021), and lives in Evanston with her family.
