Guest Scholar – Religious Ideas about Criminal Justice Reform, With Rabbi Rachel S. Mikva, Ph.D.

Sunday, January 16, 2022 14 Sh'vat 5782

9:30 AM - 10:30 AMZoom

Co-sponsored with Sholom Justice

If you ask folks what the Bible says about justice, they are likely to cite "an eye for an eye," as if that is religion's only and final word on the subject. In truth, concepts of justice in sacred texts are far more complex--and can illuminate our struggles with America's broken criminal justice system. Come explore ideas from Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, and imagine how they might inspire reform today.

Rabbi Mikva is the Rabbi Herman E. Schaalman Chair & Professor of Jewish Studies at the Chicago Theological Seminary. She earned a M.A. and rabbinical ordination from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion and a PhD from Jewish Theological Seminary. She generally introduces herself as a rabbi and professor who works at the intersections of sacred texts, culture, and ethics.
